The Caribou Bikefest Weekend

By Sundance Topham

August 11 & 12, 2012

The Mountain Caribou Migration Road Ride
August 11, 2012 10:00 am.

Take part in the Gold Rush Cycling Club’s 82 km bike ride from Quesnel to Wells.
En route you will climb a total of 726 meters, fall in love with the scenery, and probably want to move to the Cariboo.

82 km too far? Then do the Caribou Calf from Troll Ski Resort to Wells, which is only half the distance.

Along the way we will provide a support car with first aid and bike maintenance. There will also be rest stops with refreshments and crummies for your tummy.
Once in Wells you will be greeted by the colourful locals in this friendly Mountain town. After we tally up what funds were raised for Mountain Caribou and give out some well deserved rewards you can choose to take the free shuttle back to town or make it an adventure and spend the night at a fine motel or campsite, and maybe even choose to ride back to Quesnel after your stay.

The Barkerville Boneshaker
AUGUST 12, 2012 10:00 am

This race gets its name from the original Barkerville Boneshaker ‘velocipede’ (bicycle) which was built in Barkerville by the local blacksmith in 1869.  It was the first bicycle of any kind to be built in western Canada.
Our race lives up to the ‘Boneshaker’ moniker - the course is set on wilderness bike trails that are certainly rough in places. The Boneshaker is a 35km route on the wilderness mountain bike trails around Wells and Barkerville, including historic ditchline trails.  The trails are rough with moderate and steep slopes.
The route takes riders on the Valley Mountain Trail, the Cemetery Trail, the Goldfields Ditch Trail, the original Cariboo Waggon Road, and the Cow Mountain Ditch Trail.  Many of these trails date back to the goldrush era of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  Some were built as ditchlines to divert water for the gold mining operations.  They have recently been re-opened to give recreational access to this historic area and scenic area.
